Biography

Aleksei Kiseliov is a Belarusian-born cellist whose career spans solo performance, chamber music, orchestral leadership, and education at the highest levels. Praised for his warm sound and lyrical expressivity, he is currently Solo Cellist with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.  

Aleksei has performed as soloist with orchestras including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, London Firebird Orchestra, the State Symphony and Chamber Orchestras of Belarus, the St. Petersburg State Academic Capella Symphony, and the Orpheus Sinfonia in London. His performances have taken him to venues such as the Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal (Amsterdam), Bozar and Flagey(Brussels), Cadogan Hall, the Purcell Room and the Royal Albert Hall (London), and to concert halls across France, Switzerland, Germany and the U.S. 

Since 2022, he has held the position of Solo Cellist with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 2011 to 2022, Aleksei served as Principal Cellist of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, regularly performing as soloist and in chamber ensembles. He has appeared as Guest Principal with the Oslo Philharmonic, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and English National Opera.

A passionate chamber musician, Aleksei has has appeared at many leading festivals, among them Korsholm Music Festival, Musica Mundi Festival, the Yuri Bashmet International Music Festival, Les Vacances de Monsieur Haydn, Kronberg Academy’s Cello Masterclasses and Concerts, Beauvais Cello Festival and GAIA Chamber Music Festival. He has collaborated with distinguished artists including Itamar Golan, Alexandre Kantorow, Benjamin Grosvenor, Alasdair Beatson, Maxim Vengerov, Nicola Benedetti, Giovanni Sollima and Gavriel Lipkind.

Alongside his performing career, Aleksei is an experienced teacher and mentor. He currently teaches at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and previously served as cello professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland from 2011 to 2021. He regularly gives masterclasses and sectional coaching for institutions including NYOS (National Youth Orchestra of Scotland), Musica Mundi and the Royal College of Music in London, where he assisted Hélène Dautry during his Lambert Fellowship.

Han gerregelbundet mästarklasser och sektionsundervisning för institutioner som NYOS (National Youth Orchestra of Scotland), Musica Mundi samt Royal College of Music i London, där hanassisterade Hélène Dautry under sin Lambert Fellowship.

In addition to his musical activities, Aleksei has served as artistic director of the Melodrama International Music Festival, which he founded in 2008 in London and Minsk.

Born in Minsk in 1985, Aleksei began cello studies at the age of five with Vladimir Perlin at the Republican Music College of Belarus. He continued his studies with Tilman Wick at the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, and later as a student of Jérôme Pernoo and Raphael Wallfisch at the Royal College of Music in London, where he received both his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours and a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction, and further studies at Trinity Laban with Natalie Clein. Important mentors include Bernard Greenhouse, Anner Bylsma, Frans Helmerson, Pieter Wispelwey, Ralph Kirshbaum and Gavriel Lipkind.

His early performances included a solo tour of Holland at the age of nine, concerts with the State Chamber Orchestra and the State Symphony Orchestra of Belarus, the Opera and Ballet House of Minsk, and invitations to perform in Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Notably, Aleksei performed at the Franco-Belarusian Musical Spring festival and gave recitals at Cortot Hall and the Théâtre du Trianon in Paris.

Aleksei was recently awarded the Sten Frykberg scholarship from the Royal Music Academy for his exploration into cello ergonomics. He has also been recognised with international awards, including top prizes at the Music of Hope International Competition and the Tchaikovsky International Youth Competition in St. Petersburg, Belarus Pupil of the Year, two awards from the Presidential Fund for Talented Youth as well as a special prize from the Vladimir Spivakov Fund. Aleksei received a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music, and was awarded the Leverhulme Trust Award, Richard Carne Award (twice), Lilian Sutton Award, Orpheus Sinfonia Trust Award, Worshipful Company of Musicians Lambert Fellowship, and top prizes including “Best Performance of a British Work” at the Haverhill Sinfonia Soloist Competition.

Aleksei performs on a rare 1740 Don Nicolo Amati cello, generously on loan from the Swedish Järnåker Foundation.

Aleksei har nyligen tilldelats Sten Frykbergs stipendium från Kungliga MusikaliskaAkademien för sitt arbete med violoncellens ergonomi.
